Hartlebury Castle

Wings to the Past are delighted to be partnered with Hartlebury Castle and Dig Hartlebury to offer 2 serving personnel or a family member, the chance to spend 2 days excavating the site of a possible English Civil War bastion. It is our 1st project outside of Lincolnshire with the excavation taking place just south of Kidderminster. Dig Hartlebury offered Wings to the Past 2 spaces on their excavation for the 27 and 28 Jul 2023. This opportunity was available to serving personnel and their family, however only for those over the age of 18. Head over to the Dig Hartlebury Facebook page for more information on the site.

Day One

The first day was a great success, Dig Hartlebury had already been working on the site since the Monday and had made significant progress on the trench. Our two participants, an army sergeant and a navy spouse eagerly took part and moved large amounts of soil as they excavated down. A few finds were found including several nice pieces of pottery.

Day Two

Another great day of digging, our two participants excavated a pot hole and helped to excavate a section of the trench highlighting the bedrock feature that the bastion was built into. The pot hole’s were also interesting as they were very square indicating that they may have been stolen from a local house or construction project.
