What to ExpectAn opportunity to get involved with the history of Lincoln on a large scale dig.
Wings to the Past invites RAF personnel, dependants and the wider community to a major archaeological excavation in Lincoln from 2–4 October. This large‑scale dig offers practical field experience, community engagement and wellbeing benefits through hands‑on heritage work.
Project overview
Location: South Common, Lincoln (detailed site information provided to registered participants)
Dates: Friday 2 October – Sunday 4 October
Availabilty: 6 Adult Places (Over 16, Children are welcome)
Lead team: Experienced archaeologists from Wings to the Past and our partners
Scale: Multi‑trenched excavation employing survey, stratigraphic excavation, finds processing and on‑site recording for a broad participant cohort
Why this matters
Significant heritage: The Lincoln area has rich, multi‑period deposits likely to yield features and artefacts that illuminate past military, domestic and landscape use.
Research value: The excavation is designed to answer targeted research questions identified with local partners, contributing to regional archaeological knowledge and conservation priorities.
Community and wellbeing: Structured digging, interpretation and teamwork build practical skills, social connection and resilience.
Who should attend
RAF personnel and dependants at all levels of experience—no prior archaeological background required
What participants will do
Take part in supervised trench excavation and context recording
Undertake finds recovery, cleaning and initial identification in the finds tent
Learn survey techniques (planning, section drawing, basic geophysics demonstration if available)
Contribute to data capture and a wrap‑up public briefing on day 3
